The Skinny On Small Business

I've been doing logos for a couple of years now (even though FFK has been established for 3). What started as a way to pass the time and beautify my social media spaces, expanded into what you see today.

Going from changing tints on pictures, to making wallpapers for my friends...to finally doing business logos for those small business in need of a 'face'...has been rough.

With NO financial backing and being self-taught...it's been a hard road. Having to learn how to set prices, policies, money exchange, and learning the worth of my time and art...has all brought me to a place of understanding what business is. I've haggled with people who didn't want to pay what I asked and have even been left holding product that I can't reuse. (Logos/banners, etc...are CUSTOMIZED, so unlike a shirt at a store, it can't be put back onto the floor for sale) I've had people get technical with me, trying to redefine what a logo or a template means and some who have dangled the prospect of business, but faded away.

When you're doing it all by yourself, it's even harder. There is no real "team" here. I'm the sole artist of Fancy Face Kreations, thus making me soley responsible for making this business a name people remember. There's nothing like having a former client send work my way because they know someone who needs what I have to offer.

My only concern is that customers looking to patronize learn a few things about small business and what it is that we go through:

~ It's more professional to wait until you have the funds to entertain a business. Even if the prices or the work ISN'T the reason, and finances are...it leaves the SBO feeling discouraged. It's hard to sell a product...let alone an art-based one.

~ Be mindful of time. The same way you'd want your product done efficiently and in a timely fashion, so does a SBO desire to have their monies on time.

~ Tell EVERYONE you know about your new product (if you are satisfied). Word of mouth is an SBO's best friend.

In closing, Small Business Owners are at times working ten times harder to achieve half the success of a known big company. Give respect, regard time and energy...and remember that you can be a part of a community that supports talented and hungry business owners. We're creating legacies, not just businesses.
